Sydney Markley is a junior majoring in biology/pre-medicine with a minor in business. This summer, she studied abroad at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy.
Along with taking two classes, she visited many ancient monuments such as the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountain.
“Almost every weekend I traveled to a different place in Italy,” Markley said. “I traveled to the city of Florence twice and to Montepulciano to learn about wine making,” Markley said. “I also spent a day in the small town of Assisi touring many famous churches.”
While in Rome, Markley lived in an apartment in the Trastevere neighborhood with five other girls who were studying at the same university.
“It was a lot of fun, but the only downside was that there was no air conditioning,” Markley said.
Markley said her favorite part of the summer was getting to travel to Italy and experience the culture.
“I had never been out of the country before, but it was the best experience of my life,” Markley said.
Something that Markley learned this summer is how to adapt to new situations.
“Adjusting to a different culture was difficult, but very rewarding because it allowed me to relate to the Italian citizens and their customs,” Markley said. “My summer experience taught me to be accepting of others because we all come from different backgrounds.”
Markley said over the summer she missed being able to see all her sisters who she became close with during the school year, hanging out at the Theta house, and all of the random Sonic and Cold Stone trips with her sisters.
“I am really looking forward to living in Theta this upcoming year so I can become closer with more girls in our sorority,” Markley said. “I also loved homecoming. I am really looking forward to participating in that again this year.”
